Ron Carter, Al Foster, Eli Degibri - The Eternal Triangle

This summer, the Red Sea Jazz Festival presents an original and exclusive performance! A rare music session joins on stage two veteran jazz pillars, Ron Carter and Al Foster, and Eli Degibri, their student and protégé who has grown to be a notable jazz musician in his own right. Carter and Foster are among the few who have had the privilege to hone their skills alongside legendary trumpeter Miles Davis and have both become a source of inspiration and earned living legend status. Together they form one of the best rhythm sections in the history of jazz characterized by virtuoso playing and distinctly opulent sound.

Eli Degibri Quartet live at Jazz à Juan Festival

Eli Degibri Quartet at the Ancona Jazz Festival

Ancona Jazz Summer Festival 2019 I 01-18 Luglio

ELI DEGIBRI QUARTET “A Tribute to Hank Mobley"
Eli Degibri, sax tenore, sax soprano; Tom Oren, pianoforte;
Tamir Shmerling, contrabbasso; Eviatar Slivnik, batteria

As an instrumentalist, composer, and bandleader, Eli Degibri boasts a seemingly bottomless fount of artistry. “An exceptionally melodic improviser with a big, bold tenor tone" (Bill Milkowski, JazzTimes), he’s been recording and performing extensively for two decades as both a leader and as an MVP sideman with the groups of two jazz legends, Herbie Hancock (1999–2002) and Al Foster (2002–2011). It is rare in our time to hear a tenor saxophonist exploring such a wide range of expression: alternately sharp and mellow, funky or caressing, sometimes on the verge of bursting with the urgency of his playing. That’s why Herbie Hancock unequivocally states that Eli Degibri “has the potential to be a formidable force in the evolution of jazz."

Zig Zag presents the Eli Degibri Quartet!

Eli Degibri’s CD is a tribute to Hank Mobley with his quartet playing all six of the selections that Hank played on the original Soul Station disc and keeping much of the relaxed feel of that original session fifty-eight years ago. But it is much more than that.

The best jazz soloists do not copy or imitate but soon develop their own unique method of expression. Degibri took what he wanted from whom he wanted to take and, as American critic Joe Goldberg put it in his note to Mobley’s original LP ‘everyone does that, the difference between genius and hackwork is the manner in which it is done.’ He too, has emerged with a definite statement to make. So while this album is a heartfelt tribute to Mobley it is, first and foremost an example of Eli Degibri creating a strong, personal jazz statement.

He is now engaged in the long-standing tradition of mentorship in the jazz world; his current quartet consists of three young, promising and swinging musicians, the pianist Tom Oren, drummer Eviatar Slivnik and bassist Tamir Shmerling.

Degibri’s 2015 recording Cliff Hangin’ received a 5-star review from the prestigious DownBeat magazine. His current project is a loving tribute to legendary saxophonist and one of Degibri's biggest inspirations, Hank Mobley, and specifically to Mobley's masterpiece record, Soul Station.

2019 Biamp PDX Jazz Festival presents Wide Angles: Remembering Michael Brecker with Guest Soloists Eli Degibri & Marcus Strickland + Chris Potter Trio w/ Eric Harland & James Francies

“Following a Michael Brecker solo is like nothing else that I have ever experienced, and very few musicians on any instrument can do it. It’s because he’s deep! By the time he gets done with an audience, people are standing on their chairs screaming. He gets to people under their skin, and that’s what makes him heavy." – Pat Metheny (DownBeat Magazine)

2019 will mark what would have been Michael Brecker’s 70th birthday. The late saxophonist is among the most inspiring and often imitated saxophonists in the last three decades of jazz, and one who often investigated and revitalized the music’s legacy in a fresh manner that propelled it into a constant state of expansion.

Wide Angles, conceived in 2002 in support of a U.K. Arts Council tour, served as the catalyst for Brecker’s most ambitious and emotionally-charged recording the following year. The album resulted in a large ensemble of brass, woodwind, and string players, and was recorded as an extended ten-song saxophone concerto, orchestrated and arranged by Gil Goldstein. Until then, Brecker had never led an orchestra and had rarely framed his sound with a large ensemble. In its weight, authority, daring, and panoramic scope, it also makes clear that Brecker was one of the foremost composers in jazz of his generation.

Collaborating with Goldstein, Brecker enthused, “Gil created the arrangements underneath the solos and expanded the orchestrations, and he was very meticulous about staying loyal to my original ideas and re-orchestrating them. He also beautifully arranged and orchestrated three of the tunes from the ground up."

Wide Angles, under the musical direction of Gil Goldstein, will be performed live for the first time in Portland as part of the Philly Special festival program on closing weekend. John Nastos has assembled the brass ensemble and string quartet for this For Portland Only special occasion. Guest saxophonists include Eli Degibri, Maria Grand and Marcus Strickland. Degibri, a native of Tel Aviv who serves as the Artistic Director for the Red Sea Festival where Brecker often performed, recently initiated the first International Saxophone Competition in Brecker’s name.

Jazz Standard

Two sets! 7:30 pm & 9:30 pm

Saxophonist, composer, and bandleader Eli Degibri delivers charismatic performances as “an exceptionally melodic improviser with a big, bold tenor tone" (Bill Milkowski, JazzTimes). The Israeli–born musician made his bones with the groups of Herbie Hancock and Al Foster; he possesses, said Hancock, “the potential to be a formidable force in the evolution of jazz."

Now a skilled leader in his own right, Degibri has assembled an incandescent quartet of youthful compatriots, including pianist Tom Oren and drummer Eviatar Slivnik. At this writing, Eli Degibri is at work on his next recording project: A tribute to legendary saxophonist Hank Mobley – one of Degibri’s biggest inspirations – and specifically to Mobley's 1960 hard–bop masterpiece, Soul Station.

"If you haven’t played the record yet this, now, is your second and final phase of the journey and the integration of Soul Station, volumes 1 (1960) & 2 (2018) into the modern jazz hall of fame" (Derek Ansell).

The combination of musicianship and material will make this Jazz Standard appearance a night to remember – don’t miss it!

Winter Jazz Fest @ Zinc Bar

The 2018 NYC Winter Jazzfest presents the Eli Degibri Quartet!

As an instrumentalist, composer, and bandleader, Eli Degibri boasts a seemingly bottomless fount of artistry. “An exceptionally melodic improviser with a big, bold tenor tone" (Bill Milkowski, Jazz Times), he’s been recording and performing extensively for two decades as both a leader and as an MVP sideman with the groups of two jazz legends, Herbie Hancock (1999–2002) and Al Foster (2002–2011). It is rare in our time to hear a tenor saxophonist exploring such a wide range of expression: alternately sharp and mellow, funky or caressing, sometimes on the verge of bursting with the urgency of his playing. That’s why Herbie Hancock unequivocally states that Eli Degibri “has the potential to be a formidable force in the evolution of jazz." Don’t miss this rare New York appearance by a future giant of jazz!

The Degibri Big Band - Featuring Dikla, Miri Mesika and Marina Maximilian
Everything begins with a dream. Eli Degibri dreamt one night that he was playing a baritone saxophone. The next morning he woke up and went to the music store returning with a baritone saxophone in his bag. As his heart filled with the penetrating deep, strong, and gentle sound of the lynchpin of every fine saxophone section, he decided to form a Big Band. Degibri, described by Herbie Hancock as a musician that “has the potential to be a formidable force in the evolution of jazz," is a composer with a distinct voice and longstanding bandleader of his own quartet. However, this time it is a Big Band, a hardcore Big Band, in the classic American tradition of Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller, and friends.

The Zone proudly presents The Degibri Big Band with some very special guests in an exceptional night of jumpin’ jazz.

At the helm of the evening we have Mr. Eli Degibri. whose totally outstanding career path has brought him from Yafo to The White House alongside a group of living jazz giants. His story justifies a longer biography, but let’s just feel blessed to have him direct this musical celebration.

Along with the maestro and 10 of the best musicians to be found in the burning hot Israeli jazz scene, a series of very special guests will be joining:

Alon Olearchik / Shlomi Shaban / Efrat Gosh / Ilan Salem / Avichai Ornoy / Anna Tabachnikov / Gilad Braunstein
